There is a saying goes that the places and the ways to discover dzi are filled with mythological and legendary elements. In the following, we will introduce some origin of dzi in short:
(1) Plankton from the ancient sea: In the origin form, the dzi were like mollusks and conches with a fleshy body protected by a shell. They can move about freely. After the Himalayas Mountain forming, no more sea existed, and the plankton died, their shells become dzi.
(2) Painted stone from India: A couple who lived in the Himalayas Mountain painted designs onto a unique kind of India stone. Since the skill to paint the stone is very difficult and not everyone can learn, the skill was lost after they dead.
(3) Meteorites from outer space: Meteorites fell from outer space onto the fields, after yogic practitioners' refine, they become dzi.
(4) Snake-Like living things: Dzi are living things that can move about like snakes. When they are found and touched, they stop moving and turn into a string of dzi.
(5) Appear in fields: Dzi were buried deep underground, after long-term geological movements, dzi were created, and then discovered and picked up by farmers during fieldwork.
(6) Dzis are insects that can fly, run and crawl: After covered by Lamas' long robe, dzi solidify to the set type. The crawling ones, become solid when being sprinkled sand by human beings, if not, they will disappear.
(7) Dzis can be discovered in the dzi meadows: People with good fortune can see dzi flying above the Tibet meadow. They become dzi after being captured.
(8) Dzi are the weapon of Asura: Asura belongs to one of the six classes of living beings. He always being an opponent to Sakyamuni and does not listen to the Buddha's words. Therefore he is considered as a none-god, none-divine and none-human being character. He makes up dzi as his weapon.
(9) Dzis are precious jewels of the gods: Tibetans say that dzi are the precious jewels of the gods who discard the blemished ones to human world. That explains why it is extremely difficult to find a perfect dzi.
(10) Dzis are coming from the Dzi stream: Legend says that there were dzi flowing continuously like a stream from a mountain near Rutog in Ngari. One day, a wicked woman with "evil eye" conjurated toward the stream, from that day on, no dzi ever discovered from the stream.
(11) Dzi are the magic cast by Vajravarahi Buddha: During those early years when Tibet was overwhelmed by severe epidemic, Tibetans were plunged into an abyss of mistery and they led a very hard life. Fortunately, the compassionate Vajravarahi Buddha came to relieve them by dropping from the sky magic dzi. Anyone who was predestined to obtain them would be relieved from disease, calamities and bad luck.
(12) Celestial flowers sprinkled by Manjusuri Buddha: It is said that a severe epdemic spread across the Himalayan country aound three thousand years ago. Many people sied and great loss was incurred. Manjusri Buddha, the former incarnation of Manjusri Bodhisattva, happened to pass the sky above the Himalayas. When he saw that the Tibetans were living in great turmoil, a great compassion grew from his heart. He then spinkled dzi down to the human world. Whoever found them and picked them up would have thier disease cured.
(13) Dzi are the precious stones in the treasury of the Tagzig kindom: After King Gesar of the Ling Kingdom had defeated the Tagzig Kingdom, he found many precious items, including Dzi , in the treasury of Tagzig. King Gesar distributed the dzi to his soldiers who then carried them back to Tibat. At that time, dzi spread all over the region. |
